Instagram Updates Teen Accounts With Additional Protections Users In India

Instagram brings its Teen Accounts functionality to users in India which keep younger users safe on the platform. This feature restricts the functionality of accounts owned by underage users on the service and it also requires parental consent to change some settings on the platform. Adding this Instagram is also allowing parents of users above the age of 16 to enable supervision features, and offensive words and phrases will automatically be filtered out of messages and comments.

In a blog post, Instagram announced that it will set teen accounts to private by default, for existing users under 16 and new users under 18. Private accounts only limit to approved users which means that other accounts on Instagram won’t be able to see teenagers’ posts or comment on them.

Younger users can only message accounts they have added on the service. Tag and mentions will also be limited on Teen Account, and the service will block offensive things that directly or indirectly harass or bully younger users via comments and messages.

Instagram also placed limits on access to content for Teen Accounts, it will filter out cosmetic procedure advertisements from the Reels section or Explore tab, along with content that shows physical fights. According to the platform, Instagram will ask teenagers to exit once the teenager have used the app for 60 minutes in a day, and it will also automatically turn on Sleep Mode between 10pm and 7am.

Instagram Improved Parental Controls And Age Verification Measures

After the new update brought by Instagram, parents of the users will also be able to check their teens on Instagram, which includes seeing a list of who they messaged on the platform over the last seven days, but the service won’t show parents the contents of their children’s messages. More than this parents can also set daily limits that block the access to Instagram after a particular time limit or during sleep mode.

Instagram also says that some young users who are signing up for the first time on the platform do not provide their age correctly, in order to combat this, Instagram is improving its age verification methods- which includes using ID cards or video selfies, to make sure that all accounts held by younger users are Teen Accounts on the Meta-owned platform.
