Elon Musk’s satellite-based broadband service, Starlink, is all set to make a debut in India. After some months of delays, the company officials submitted the required documents to Indian authorities, which is signaling its progress towards receiving regulatory approval.
Government Approvals Is Still In Progress
According to Economic Times, Starlink has applied to the Indian Space regulator for permission to fully operate in the country. The Standing Committee of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center, under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Space Department, will go through and review the application before giving any approvals.
DoT License Required Must
Even after Starlink gets a clearance in the space regulator’s review, the company will still need an operator license from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Only after receiving this license the company can officially launch its satellite-based broadband services in India.

Starlink’s Benefits And Limitations

Starlink’s entry in the Indian telecom market will bring high-speed internet to remote areas where fiber optics or mobile towers are unavailable, but the service may come at a steep price. This could limit its access to those who are living in rural or underserved regions.
High-Level Conversations Keeps Hope
The development follows recent discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Elon Musk during Modi’s visit to U.S. If all the approvals are given to the company, then it will be ready to launch and could bring revolution in the telecom market by providing internet access in India’s most remote locations.
